Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) involves chronic inflammation of all or part of the digestive tract. IBD primarily includes Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn's Disease. The disease can be painful and debilitating and may sometimes lead to life-threatening complications. It affects over 4 million people worldwide, including 1.6 million Americans and 250,000 Canadians.
It is important to note that Nutrition plays a significant role in the management of diseases involving chronic inflammation. An exclusion diet (eliminating certain foods while adding others), together with appropriate supplement and lifestyle changes, has been clinically proven to be extremely effective. This is a systematic approach which puts focus on the root of the problem rather than just masking the symptoms. As a parent and Nutritionist, I am constantly amazed at the positive effects of nutritional therapy on chronic illness.
The IBD Program was specifically designed to support patients, and their families, living with Inflammatory Bowel Disease. The Program will also address other inflammatory disorders, such as Arthritis, Eczema, Gastritis, Psoriasis, etc. The focus of it lies primarily on encouraging patients to take a Food-as-Medicine approach, as they adhere to a highly strategic Nutritional Plan for the purpose of inducing remission and restoring health while, at the same time, educating on ways to prevent future relapses. As the Program is based on the principle that no two people with the same disease should be treated the same, what makes it unique and remarkably effective is that it is completely tailored to each individual and his/her needs.
In the words of Mark Hyman, MD, world-renowned Functional Medicine practitioner, "food has the power to heal us. It is the most potent tool we have to help prevent and treat many of our chronic diseases".
